The Winfield Police Department says at approximately 3:30 p.m. on July 26, 2025, Deputy Elijah Ming with the Wyandotte County Sheriff’s Office responded alongside other deputies and with officers from the Kansas City, Kansas police Department to a call for civil standby at a home. While on scene, an individual barricaded himself inside the residence and opened fire, striking Deputy Ming. He continued to fire on first responders. At approximately 5 p.m., the suspect exited the house and was taken into custody. Deputy Ming was transported to an area hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. He was 34.
