MAN CRASHES PICK UP INTO RIVER

A 73-year-old man died Tuesday after his pickup truck crashed and went into the Ninnescah River in Sumner County.

The crash happened at around 2 p.m. on U.S. 81 about a half-mile east of Seneca Road, west of Belle Plaine. The Kansas Highway Patrol reports a northbound Chevy Silverado went off the roadway and into the north ditch. The pickup overcorrected, struck a barrier and continued in the north ditch until it went into the river, coming to rest on its top.

The driver, Edward Fitzpatrick of Neosho Falls, was taken to a Wichita hospital where he died. The patrol’s online crash log states he was wearing his seat belt at the time of the crash. No one else was in the vehicle.
