The Kansas Highway Patrol was recently notified by a neighboring law enforcement agency that they have been receiving reports of fraudulent activity related to publicly accessible crash data. Individuals are targeting subjects who would appear to be the at-fault drivers involved in motor vehicle crashes. These individuals are posing as law enforcement officers and attempting to elicit money from the subject with scare tactics such as threat of arrest. Attempts have also been made to obtain banking details. They are using information from publicly available on-line crash data to obtain personal contact information and crash details. Motor vehicle crash data is available by law as a public record and provides limited select information about the crash, to include date, location and parties involved, but law enforcement will NEVER request money or banking information to avoid arrest or other penalties.
