On April 30, 2024, at approximately 3:51 PM Winfield Fire/EMS and Deputies from the Cowley County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to the 13000 block of 212 th Road for an injury accident. George Hawkins Jr, 82, of Arkansas City was operating a Brush Hog riding lawn mower in the north ditch. The mower’s front wheels dug into the mud and overturned onto Hawkins pinning him to the ground. Several Good Samaritans stopped, called 911, and were able to get the mower off Hawkins. Life saving measures were administered by Deputies and taken over by Winfield EMS. EagleMed was requested to launch and land at the scene. Prior to EagleMeds arrival Winfield EMS transported Hawkins to William Newton Memorial Hospital. Hawkins was later pronounced deceased at the hospital.
