The City of Arkansas City will start its annual fire hydrant flushing program this week, with work proceeding across southwest Arkansas City. The Environmental Services Department will initiate the flushing in Section 1. This section contains 80 fire hydrants along and South of Washington Avenue, South to Lincoln Avenue, and West of First Street, including the Veterans Memorial Lake area. Flushing will continue in Section 1 until at least May 28, 2024. All flushing will be conducted between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m., Monday through Friday. Environmental Services Superintendent Rod Philo said, “If you encounter any issues such as persistent discoloration or a noticeable pressure loss that is not resolved by flushing a faucet for a few minutes, please do not hesitate to call 620-441-4480 during business hours or 620-660-1115 after 5 p.m.” The Environmental Services Department advises against washing laundry if the water is discolored, as this can permanently stain the items.
