The Kansas Department of Transportation announced that portions of K-15, US 77 and US 166 will be undergoing a milling and repaving project in Cowley County later this month. Officials say the $6.9 million dollar project will get underway around June 23rd. Crews will be resurfacing K-15 from the Oklahoma/Kansas state line to the U.S. 166 junction. And the US 166 from the US 77 junction to the Chautauqua Cowley County line which is about 36 miles. They will also be working on US 77 at Arkansas City, from Summit Street to Madison Avenue-this stretch is about a mile long. Officials are estimating the work to be completed around September 19th.

Mulvane home was destroyed in an early morning fire. Officials say that the call came in shortly after 4am Monday morning that a home in the 200 block of Frontier Drive near the intersection of Pioneer and Centennial. Firefighter say when they arrived on the scene the structure was fully engulfed in flames. The family who lived in the home escaped unharmed, and no other injuries have been reported. The home is deemed a total loss. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

An Arkansas City man was injured after he hit a deer while driving on his motorcycle Monday Morning. Officials with the Cowley County Sheriff’s Office say that shortly before 6am the call came in that there was an injury accident working on US 77 eastbound just south of Winfield. 65-year-old Richard Jones was riding a 2003 Harley Davidson when he hit the deer. Jones was taken to the hospital-no further information on his condition or the extent of his injuries at this time.

The Kay County Election board has made emergency ballots available for registered voters who became physically unable to cast their vote in person can still cast their ballot in the June 28th election. Officials say that the state law allows those who became incapacitated after 5pm June 13th to vote under special provisions.
