Pre-registration ends Friday for the 14th annual Sgt. Jerry Mills Jr. Fishing Derby, which will be held from 9 to noon June 1st at Veterans Memorial Lake. Those who pre-register this week at the Arkansas City Recreation Center office are guaranteed a T-shirt. The $5 fee also includes lunch, fishing gear and drawings for prizes. Through its 14 years, the theme of the derby has been getting kids “hooked on fishing — not drugs.” The event is targeted to kids aged 5 to 15 years old. The first 30 kids who pre-register will receive a free fishing pole and reel, courtesy of the Optimists of Arkansas City… who also ask that if you have received a free pole in a previous year, please bring it with you so those most in need can get a pole. Extra poles will be available for use as needed, too. An individual trophy will be awarded for the biggest fish caught, plus team prizes for most fish caught and a drawing for various door prizes. Lunch will include hot dogs, chips, cookies, drinks, and ice cream treats. For more information call the Rec Center office at (620) 441-4300.
